This place the best espresso in Harrisburg. I go here whenever I want to treat myself with some awesome coffee surrounded by great books. Soups are offered, too. “What goes best with a good book and a cup of coffee? Homemade vegetarian soup, apparently! The Midtown Scholar, committed to enriching minds through its used-and-rare academic bookstore, is also committed to feeding the stomach…”

I love the Midtown Scholar, but, IMHO, the cafe is usually just ok…every time I’ve been there, the service was unforgivably slow (considering that I was the only person in line!). There are times that the people behind the counter seem to be more interested in each other than the customers. Or maybe it is just some of the customers. For example, it seems that the older I get, the less visible I am to “supercool” waitstaff who happen to be fortunate enough to be working in a supercool place…maybe they are confused about who and what actually is supercool? Maybe they haven’t realized that a certain percentage of the customers visiting a bookstore that specializes in old, out of print texts will inevitably be “of a certain age”? My experience today was the worst…4 or 5 workers hanging around behind the counter couldn’t be bothered to notice me for several minutes, and then couldn’t remember a simple 2 item order. Usually don’t write these kinds of things, but today was the tipping point. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll go back–love the location, the books, the cafe section is beautiful and the coffee is quite good. I just dislike being ignored by people who are taking my money. Oh yeah, not all THAT old, anyway…

The Midtown Scholar is one of my favorite places in Harrisburg. The staff has always been friendly and attentive when I’ve visited, the pastries are delicious and fairly priced, and the coffee and tea choices are fantastic. I’m sure the majority of my time will be spent here once school starts back up, and I cannot wait for the new sections and bakery to open up. Check it out!
